The finale of our Jazz+ series features local a cappella group VSing and the Patrick Lui Quartet. Anna Lo, alto singer with VSing, and Patrick Lui have re-arranged and transformed some Chinese and Western pop songs into the styles of ballads, Swing and Bossa Nova.

Want to practise your improvisation skills and jam with a jazz band?  Here’s your chance!  Open Platform provides opportunities for young, amateur musicians to jam and improvise with professional artists and bands.

In this last Open Platform show, the host band is led by Teriver Cheung (guitar), joined by Bowen Li (piano), Scott Dodd (bass) and Andy Gander (drums).  After a warm-up set of Teriver's original compositions, they’ll invite audience-members to step up and jam with them!

Touring jazz guitarist Chi-ho Choi hosts the Jazz+ show in April, and joining him will be some of his jazz musician friends. Chi-ho is bringing his re-arrangements of some of the greatest hits of the 80’s and 90’s, ranging from Metallica to Brian McKnight to Jamiroquai.

Presented by the Fringe Club as one of the programmes of the “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, Jazz Workshop is the training programme of the Jazz Youth Internship Scheme Phase II.  From November 2018 to May 2019, a series of six workshops will be held at the Fringe Club.  Topics range from jazz improvisation to arts administration.  The workshop will be opened to the public as well.

This third and final workshop in the series will be hosted by Hong Kong jazz guitar legend Eugene Pao, who will share his approach to jazz improvisation. If you’re a jazz guitarist, you’re welcome to participate – bring your own guitar and get on-the-spot coaching from Eugene!

The Happy-Go-Lucky Bigband, led by Japanese trumpeter and conductor Kenny Matsuura, was formed in 2010 as a rehearsal big band at a rented studio in Kowloon.  It’s a full 18-piece Jazz orchestra of young and eager-to-learn musicians dedicated to big-band-style jazz, and many members are music teachers.

Big Band Night – FACE Saxophone Big Band Live

Big Band Nights feature different local jazz big bands to perform at Fringe Dairy.

Founded in 2011, the FACE Saxophone Big Band now has over 50 members.  The band mainly performs big-band jazz music, ranging from the traditional Swing tune “Sing Sing Sing” to tunes by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band and the Nettai Tropical Jazz Big Band, plus modern Latin, Rock and Funk music.  The band has participated in many events, including the Hong Kong Summer Jazz Festival 2016 and “Big Band Era 2017”, both organised by the Hong Kong Big Band Jazz Federation.

The Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra, founded in 1990, is the most authentic Swing Big Band in Hong Kong.  The band comprises 20 rocking musicians from almost as many nationalities.  Led by Taka Hirohama, the SNJO has performed in many music and arts festivals, including “Spotlight Hong Kong in Penang” in June 2014.
