Synopsis

Views, whether man-made or natural, are objects of expression and aesthetic representation.  The contemporary social landscape in which we exist is, in the same way that Baudelaire described modernity, “the ephemeral, the fugitive, the contingent…”.  Four artists from Hong Kong and the Mainland depict their own views and attempt to find an intersection in a modern context.

WU Chun-yin, Aries

Aries Wu was born in Guangzhou, China, in 1985, and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.  In 2011, he founded Aries Art Studio in Hong Kong.  In his view, painting is the process of recording life and time, which link him closely with what is around him.  He enjoys observing trivial things silently, finding traces of life in ordinary daily life.  He perceives that after things and space suffer through time, they leave behind their own specific stories.  Beauty lies precisely in the relationship between humans and objects.

LUI Wa was born in Shanwei, Guangdong, in 1989, and received his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art (CAA).  As a student, he won scholarships for “Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Overseas Chinese and Taiwanese Students” in Zhejiang, three times.  He has won numerous awards in drawing competitions in Hong Kong and the Mainland, including the “6th Oil Painting Exhibition Award” at the China Academy of Art 2012 and Third Prize in the Graduation Exhibition of the China Academy of Art 2013.  From 2014 to 2016, he participated in many joint exhibitions in Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Lui’s works, “Curtain of night” and “Familiar landscape”, are mixed scenes that convey a sense of Hong Kong.  “Curtain of night” takes on infinite varieties of the triangular structure, which regards night as the diaphragm that cannot be removed, and also alludes to the gap and the estrangement between people.  “Familiar landscape” is a recombination of unfamiliar sights without identity and the cypress tree, which is a familiar sight on the streets of Hong Kong, expressing the feeling of homesickness.

GU Yu-lin

GU Yu-lin was born in Suzhou, China, in 1992.  She received her Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the China Academy of Art.  During her studies, she not only received full scholarships to the academic exchange programme at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK), but also won scholarships from the China Academy of Art and the Zhejiang government, and participated in several exhibitions in China.

Gu’s work “Far afield”is inspired by the popular saying “Life is more than what you see, there are also poems and distant fields.”  As a contemporary concept in society, “Field” represents modern humanistic care, beyond just the simple meaning of the word.  This kind of poetic and distant landscape is also an exploration and excavation of the pursuit of inner integrity.

YIU Chu-tung

YIU Chu-tung was born in 1982 and is a full-time painter.  He pursued further study in New Zealand in his early years and received a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from RMIT University (the programme is co-presented with the Hong Kong Art School).  Yiu is renowned for his attention to detail and the degree of realism in his drawings.  He has participated in both joint and solo exhibitions, including Fine Art Asia (2014), GFAA Beijing (2014), ART14 LONDON (2014), Agricultural Exhibition Center, Beijing (2013), AHAF Mandarin Oriental (2013), and Gallery by the Harbour, Harbour City, Hong Kong (2012).

Yiu sees painting as an imprint of our mind, and chooses painting to search and know his inner self and set himself free.  In recent years, he has begun to produce oil paintings, and their subjects and themes are always about the city and the countryside.

Yiu loves to use pencil sketching techniques in his works, and oil painting is the main medium that he uses in this exhibition.  The three works on show are consistent with his past sketching works, with similar philosophies behind their creation.  All of them are created with a simple structure with few details, light and shade, and a unique visual style.  The texture of flowing colours and pigments in oil paintings is unlike that of pencil sketching, so the paintings are more abstract.  Random patterns are put together painstakingly, like pieces of a puzzle.
