Synopsis

[All tickets are SOLD OUT. Thank you for your support.]

Lin Sheng-xiang and Ken Ohtake first met at Taipei’s Migration Music Festival in 2003, and have worked and performed together closely since then.  In 2006, Ken provided the finishing touches to Sheng-xiang’s album Planting Trees, while in 2009 they showed off their harmonious guitar chemistry in Growing Up Wild.  By 2010’s The Land is My Study, the duo had developed an inseparable compatibility.  The SX & Ken Unplugged Concert in Hong Kong is a rare chance to see just the two of them together on stage again since Sheng-Xiang & Band began performing as a full band a few years ago.

Lin Sheng-xiang

Lin Sheng-xiang is one of Taiwan’s most revered Hakka folk musicians.  Born in southern Taiwan’s Meinong district in 1974, he started engaging in social activism when his first band, Kuan-tsu Music Pit, joined protests against the government’s plans to build a local dam.  In 1997-1998, after staging several album concerts in collaboration with the Meinung People’s Association, he began to seriously ponder the social and cultural meaning of music and decided to return to his hometown.  This also marked an important turning point in his musical journey.

In 1998, Sheng-xiang began his partnership with Taiwanese poet Chung Yung-feng to convey the lives and emotional experiences of the Taiwanese people through music, releasing 10 albums over 20 years.  Their lyrics are structured around the land and the people, while their music combines traditional and modern instruments.   Yung-feng is a two-time Best Lyricist winner at the Golden Melody Awards, and Sheng-xiang has won nine Golden Melody Awards, 10 Golden Indie Music Awards, two Golden Horse Awards and a Taipei Film Award for Outstanding Artistic Contribution in Music.

Ken Ohtake

Ken Ohtake has been Lin Sheng-xiang’s most important musical partner over the past few years.  Born in Japan in 1974, Ken became interested in the electric guitar and pop music during high school and started getting into various other genres such as rock, jazz and folk music at university.  In recent years he has focused on the acoustic guitar, and is a long-time collaborator of legendary Okinawan folk musician Hirayasu Takashi, who lauds Ken as his “most calm and restrained partner”.
