Synopsis

19th century, “l’art pour l’art”. It expresses a philosophy that the intrinsic value of art, and the only “true” art, is divorced from any didactic, moral or utilitarian function. Simply saying “Art for art’s sake” used to convey the idea that the chief or only aim of a work of art is the self-expression of the individual artist who creates it. This exhibition shows how I go from indoors to outdoors.

Artist’s Biography

YU Pui-shan

YU was born in Hong Kong, and gained a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, majoring in painting. Her paintings are influenced by her own daily life: she travelled to the UK during her studies to observe everything around her and gain new life experience, while exploring human behaviour through art practice from different perspectives. She often uses symbolic imagery rather than direct representation in her paintings.

YU has participated in stage design projects and various events that promoted the arts. She is now working as an independent artist in Hong Kong. In 2013 she published her first art book and had her first solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Some of her works have been collected by collectors in France, Beijing and Hong Kong.
