Synopsis

Are you tired of typical Cantopop music, and are you looking for a change?  But is it possible to combine Chinese music and jazz music?  And how can dance collaborate with jazz?

Presented by the Fringe Club as part of the new “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project – Phase II, Jazz + is a series of cross-over performances between jazz and other genres that will happen every month from October 2018 to May 2019.

The second Jazz+ show in January will be hosted by Chien & Hu’s Jazz’N Folk Duo.  The crisp, clean jazz vocals of Chien and the rich, deep sound of Hu’s six-string bass combine to create a wide and unique sound spectrum.  As travellers who love both music and poetry, they’ll bring you an enjoyable night, showcasing their original jazz-folk works and some beloved jazz classics.

Chien & Hu’s Jazz’N Folk Duo

A rarely seen vocal and bass duo from Taiwan, Chien & Hu have been working together on jazz and music production for several years.  In 2017 they started presenting jazz duo arrangements featuring vocals and six-string bass, creating a unique and mellow sound.  They’re now focusing on their brand-new original jazz-folk album.

Chien Shih-min is a jazz-folk singer-songwriter and poet.  In 2013 she released her first original album, Start on a journey.  Then in 2015-2016, she pursued advanced studies in jazz vocals in New York, the Netherlands and Belgium.  Her second original album, Hmmmm…Tagore!, was released in 2016.

Hu Chun-chuan is a jazz double bassist.  As well as the double bass, he also plays the electric bass, jazz drums and other percussion instruments, and  performs in jazz festivals.  He now performs overseas in an international orchestra.  In 2017, he completed nearly 500 performances as a bassist in the musical The Lion King at the Shanghai Disneyland Resort.
