UNUSUAL DESIGNS – Made in LAAB
The philosophy of Hong Kong firm LAAB (Laboratory for Art and Architecture) is “Mens et Manus” (that’s Latin for “Mind and Hand”), bringing architects, artists, craftsmen and advanced machines together under the same roof. LAAB develops not only architecture and objects but also a process of “Design through Making”. In this exhibition, LAAB’s story is told through prototypes, models, drawings and behind-the-scenes videos.
Inspired by the Fab-Lab concept of Neil Gershenfeld at MIT, LAAB is the place where traditional craftsmanship meets digital fabrication technology, including parametric design, CNC (computer numerical control) and 3D-printing, to tackle complex geometries and unusual ideas. LAAB is also a collaborative platform: as well as fabricating its own designs, it partners with architects and artists, including world-class designers and emerging talents.
