Synopsis

City Discovery: Joint-University Cultural Mapping

Hong Kong is a rapidly developing city, with fascinating juxtapositions of the old and the new, refined and popular tastes.  Our teenagers are growing up in the midst of such contrasts and dilemmas, and are witnessing the transformation of society.

However, we should go beyond the visual experience, and express our emotions and recount our experiences through writing and storytelling.  Art enables us to capture the present moment and environment subjectively, so public spaces become associated with personal feelings and are imbued with meaning.

Local non-profit organisation Arts in Heritage Research (AHR) is undertaking an inspiring initiative of cultural mapping, in collaboration with local universities.  Its 2013 exhibition was One Minute in Hollywood Road.

For its 2014 exhibition, City Discovery: Joint-University Cultural Mapping, AHR worked with students from Lingnan University, the School of Journalism and Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Academy of Visual Arts and the Department of Visual Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University.  The participants chose districts of high cultural interest and value, explored and researched those districts, and created works in diverse media, including photographs, videos, essays, drawings and radio dramas.
