JazzSpeak is the training programme of the Jazz Youth Internship Scheme Phase I.  The talk will be opened to the public as well. 

JazzSpeak Vol. 4 to 6 will be hosted by Dr. Wong Chi-chung. Topics include concert curatorship, music marketing and music education, with guest speakers invited in the 2nd half of each talk focusing on the “Jazz” part.

Jazz Lunch: Patrick Lui Trio

If you work in Central, escape the hustle and bustle, come and immerse yourself in a lunchtime concert of live jazz music.  As Miles Davis once said, “Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life.”

Jazz Lunch showcases an impressive jazz combo in the classy setting of the Fringe Dairy.  The combo includes professional jazz musicians and young emerging talents who all appreciate the opportunity to gain exposure, showcase their musicianship and improve their skills.

From May to June, Patrick Lui and his band will be sharing his jazz music.

Jazz Masterclass – Masaru Uchibori

Japanese big band arranger Masaru Uchibori will conduct a masterclass on Big Band arrangement for the band-members of Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra (SNJO).

In the “Big Band Night - All That Swing” concert on Sat 28 April 2018, SNJO will also perform pieces arranged by Uchibori-san.

Open Platform - Bebop Era

Want to practise your improvisation skills and jam with a jazz band?  Here’s your chance!  Open Platform provides opportunities for young, amateur musicians to jam and improvise with professional artists and bands.

The 2nd Open Platform will be hosted by Tjoe Man Cheung, who leads his band NTBM (not-to-be-missed) in an evening of jazz at the Fringe Club.   They’ll be opening with a set of original jazz compositions from their latest album, and orange, and selected standards, followed by a jam session focusing on music of the 50s and 60s.

Big Band Night - Happy-Go-Lives 2018

Big Band Nights feature different local jazz big bands to perform at Fringe Dairy.

The Happy-Go-Lucky Bigband, led by Japanese trumpeter and conductor Kenny Matsuura, was formed in 2010 as a rehearsal big band at a rented studio in Kowloon.  It’s a full 18-piece Jazz orchestra of young and eager-to-learn musicians dedicated to big-band-style jazz, and many members are music teachers.

Japanese trumpeter Yoshiro Okazaki will conduct a masterclass for the band-members.  It’s open to the public and musicians are invited.  Come and sharpen your musical skills!

He will be the featured soloist at Happy-Go-Lives concert on Sat 31 March 2018 too.

Big Band Night – FACE Saxophone Big Band Live

Big Band Nights feature different local jazz big bands to perform at Fringe Dairy.

Founded in 2011, the FACE Saxophone Big Band now has over 50 members.  The band mainly performs big-band jazz music, ranging from the traditional Swing tune “Sing Sing Sing” to tunes by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band and the Nettai Tropical Jazz Big Band, plus modern Latin, Rock and Funk music.  The band has participated in many events, including the Hong Kong Summer Jazz Festival 2016 and “Big Band Era 2017”, both organised by the Hong Kong Big Band Jazz Federation.

JazzSpeak is the training programme of the Jazz Youth Internship Scheme Phase I. The first three lectures will be hosted by the Chung Brothers, examining jazz from its origins to the present, its relation to other forms of music and different styles within the jazz genre.

The Basic Notes Jazz Big Band was founded in 1993 by a group of Hong Kong amateurs who were enthusiastic about jazz music.  The band has participated in many arts and music festivals.  In Hong Kong, they have performed frequently at City Hall, the Cultural Centre, the Fringe Club and many other venues.

Formed in 2010, the Island Express Jazz Orchestra specialises in large-ensemble arrangements by modern jazz composers.  The 17 members, ranging from music professionals to businessmen, have one goal in mind: to bring a much-needed update to the big-band scene in Hong Kong.

Big Band Night: All That Swing

Big Band Nights feature different local jazz big bands to perform at Fringe Dairy.

The Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra, founded in 1990, is the most authentic Swing Big Band in Hong Kong.  The band comprises 20 rocking musicians from almost as many nationalities.  Led by Taka Hirohama, the SNJO has performed in many music and arts festivals, including “Spotlight Hong Kong in Penang” in June 2014.

Come and enjoy the unforgettable music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Bob Mintzer... because “If it ain’t got that swing, it don’t mean a thing.”  It’s ALL ABOUT SWING!
