“Jazz Masterclass” is one of the programmes of the “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, presented by the Fringe Club and the Island Express Jazz Orchestra.  Renowned Japanese jazz pianist, composer and arranger Junko Moriya will conduct a masterclass for the band-members.

Junko Moriya will use one of her big band compositions as teaching material.  First she’ll explain the keys to better composition and arrangement, then she’ll offer guidance to band-members on musical technique, interpretation, and solo skills.  If you’re a musician, you’re invited to participate – bring your own instrument and you might be invited to play with the band, or even to replace an IEJO member, for one number (scores will be provided in advance).  Come and sharpen your musical skills!

Members of the public, you’re welcome to attend too, because the musicians want an audience, so come along and enjoy the show!

Junko will also be the featured soloist at the “Big Band Night – LIVE at Fringe Dairy” concert on the night of Sat 26 Jan.

Junko Moriya

Junko began studying classical piano at the age of five.  After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Japan, she moved to New York and received her Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music.  During that time, she performed at numerous jazz clubs around the city, and in Europe as well.

Since returning to Japan in 1993, Junko has been performing at jazz clubs, concert halls and jazz festivals throughout the country, gaining recognition not only as a pianist but also as a composer and arranger.  In addition to teaching jazz piano and theory at universities, Junko directs big bands at various junior high and high schools, and is a judge of many jazz contests.

Junko has issued nine CDs as a leader.   She was the winner of the 12th Annual BMI/Thelonious Monk Jazz Composers Competition, performed at the 51st Monterey Jazz Festival in 2008, and was a musical director of the student Big Band at the 2012 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival.  She did tours in France in 2008 and 2009, directed big bands in Perth, Australia, in 2014-2016, and did concerts annually in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, Russia, between 2014 and 2018.
