Synopsis
Anton, a large-scale real estate dealer, forges his boss’s signature and loses his promising position. The financing of his expensive private home becomes uncertain, and to make matters worse, his wife—a concert pianist struggling with doubts about her own talent—reveals that she is pregnant.
Anton begins to lead a double life: he spends his days in hotels or wandering through the forest on long walks, while in the evenings he refuses to discuss his professional troubles. He persuades his wealthy mother-in-law to invest in a property in a distant city that has just been occupied by a Western power. With the fraudulently obtained funds, he finances his home and maintains his upper-class lifestyle.
When an uprising breaks out in this foreign city against the occupiers, both real and imagined profit expectations collapse. The resolute mother-in-law demands her money back. At the same time, Anton is caught between multiple pressures: the expectations of a piano student, the curiosity of his mother-in-law’s lover, and his increasingly depressed wife.
Then his former boss commits suicide—and returns as a ghostly presence, becoming a tormenting companion to Anton’s inevitable downfall.
In this new play, Marius von Mayenburg portrays a cunning opportunist who is suddenly brought crashing down. It is a work about familial mechanisms and the sustaining fictions of a society in which “fantasy” functions as a financial term, and the division of the world proceeds under the cultivated accompaniment of piano music.
